Set up email in Apple Mail

Step 1: Open Apple Mail

  1. Launch the Apple Mail application on your Mac.

  2. If this is your first time setting up an email account, you’ll see a welcome screen. If not, go to Mail > Add Account from the top menu.


Step 2: Choose Account Type

  1. Select Other Mail Account and click Continue.

  2. Enter the following details:

    • Full Name: Your name as you want it to appear in emails.

    • Email Address: Your full email address (e.g., yourname@mydomain.co.za).

    • Password: Your email account password.

  3. Click Sign In.


Step 3: Configure Incoming Mail Server (IMAP)

  1. On the next screen, you’ll need to manually enter the incoming and outgoing mail server details.

  2. For the Incoming Mail Server, enter the following:

    • Account Type: Select IMAP.

    • Mail Servermail.mydomain.co.za

    • Username: Your full email address (e.g., yourname@mydomain.co.za).

    • Password: Your email account password.

    • Port993

    • Use SSL: Check the box to enable SSL.


Step 4: Configure Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)

  1. For the Outgoing Mail Server, enter the following:

    • Mail Servermail.mydomain.co.za

    • Username: Your full email address (e.g., yourname@mydomain.co.za).

    • Password: Your email account password.

    • Port465

    • Use SSL: Check the box to enable SSL.

  2. Click Sign In.


Step 5: Verify Account Settings

  1. Apple Mail will verify your account settings. If everything is correct, you’ll see a confirmation screen.

  2. Choose the apps you want to use with this account (e.g., Mail, Notes, Contacts) and click Done.


Step 6: Test Your Setup

  1. Send a test email to ensure the outgoing server is working.

  2. Check if you can receive emails to confirm the incoming server is set up correctly.


Troubleshooting Tips

  • Incorrect Password: Double-check your email password.

  • SSL Issues: Ensure SSL is enabled for both incoming (port 993) and outgoing (port 465) servers.

  • Firewall/Network Restrictions: If you’re on a restricted network, ensure ports 993 and 465 are open.
